I, Kevin Mejia, as Sommeliere of sound, have tried, experimented with, and adapted my own lyrics to different rhythms, musical genres and production styles, seeking to evoke emotions and feelings that I often cannot describe in words, but only through the beating of the heart, the rise in blood pressure or that incredible dopaminergic journey that music can evoke in human beings.
Within that sonic universe, it was electronic music, and specifically Deep House, along with its denominations and branches such as Minimal Techno, Melodic Techno and Progressive House, that captivated me with truly tenacious force. There is something in these sounds that allowed me to feel a kind of harmonic freedom of the soul, as though certain frequencies could unlock spaces inside me that I previously did not know how to express.
I find it very difficult to convey in this text what these electronic rhythms have managed to unlock within me. It is an experience that goes far beyond listening to a song.
While it is true that SUNO has captured my attention with everything you can create yourself through a prompt expanded to as many as 1,000 characters, you also need to know a great deal about music production, instruments, arrangements, structure, sound and many other elements to know exactly what to put in that space.
Likewise, the lyrics should have a more or less clear synthesis. It is also necessary to place strategic instructions within the lyrics, because otherwise SUNO may not generate a song that truly matches what you have in mind.
And here begins a part that often goes unseen.
Finally come many hours of listening, comparison, and selection in search of the best track. Then comes remastering, using the built-in option or, as in my case, making covers of the same compositions, seeking to discover new elements, new textures, and new possibilities within the music.
AI does not perform magic
PERHAPS this section seems too technical to you, but I like to describe it for those who think Artificial Intelligence is simply magic and that pressing a couple of buttons automatically produces the song you dreamed of.
Personally, I feel this is a misconception.
As with any music production software or any tool based on AI, you must be technical, precise, and quite clear about what you want to achieve. Otherwise, you end up creating something resembling Frankenstein's child.
Musical AI can be an extraordinary tool, but the result depends enormously on the ability of the person behind it to understand production, composition, instrumentation, musical structure, frequencies, mixing and mastering.
Finally, after considerable listening effort and patience, the result is exported as a high-quality file to the famous Fruity Loops, better known as FL Studio, to undergo treatment similar to that popularized by programs such as Pimp My Ride, but applied to sound.
Here, I may apply as many as 10 different filters and processes with the aim of humanizing, improving, and bringing greater warmth to the AI's tone.
You need to become very technical, have patience, and develop a trained musical ear to adjust the many parameters offered by these audio plugins, including:
Maximus, Fruity Parametric EQ, Tuner, Fruity Blood Overdrive, Fruity Limiter, Fruity Convolver and Vintage Chorus.
Each can perform a different function within the process, and knowing when to use it, how much to use it, and, above all, when to stop is part of the real work.
Mastering and final sound for Deep House (and everything else)
Finally comes mastering, using the built-in Cloud option to work with MB Compressor and LF Exciter.
Here begins another game of precision: increasing the mids a little, adding more warmth or tonal warmth, and at the same time reducing certain brights or overly bright frequencies that can make a song tiring after listening to it for a long time.
Finally, I export the result in 24–32-bit WAV format.
The results can be truly exquisite, greatly reducing that famous listening fatigue that, in my experience, can arise when listening to AI-created music for extended periods.
Once again, I like people to know that musical AI is not as easy as it seems.
The result can be surprising, yes.
But behind that result are hours of listening, trial and error, music production, editing, mixing, mastering, patience, and a constantly trained ear.
And when everything fits, the result can sound incredible on practically any audio system.
Deep House Is Life
I hope soon to be able to try out the tracks from my album Deep House Is Life, so that together we can travel through an atmospheric concert, built on broad auditory frequencies, deep textures, and that sonic freedom that has so captivated me.
Out of a total of 14 tracks, I grouped my favorites at the beginning of the album, placing those I consider most important in that first half.
Perhaps it is because those are precisely the tracks that best represent what I have been discovering during this journey into Deep House, Melodic Techno, Progressive House and atmospheric electronic music.
Nicaragua, Tierra Bonita
I cannot hide my love for my country: Nicaragua.
And perhaps one of the most beautiful things Deep House has given me is precisely that feeling of being able to fly in my mind.
Just like a guardabarranco over our nation's mountains and ranges.
Whatever your country, region, or nation, I invite you to listen to track number 5 on the album to share that feeling with me:
“Nicaragua, Tierra Bonita”.
The song is performed by a deeply rooted female voice, a voice that carries my lyrics and feelings, accompanied by Melodic Techno arpeggios and an atmosphere designed to convey something much deeper than a simple song.
I consider this track part of my musical legacy for future generations.
And my two children, Kimberlin and Enmanuel, are currently my fiercest musical fans.
In this song, I describe some of my deepest feelings for the homeland where I was born, that land that strikes my soul every time I am away from it.
I was born in a land where geography also tells stories.
The department of Managua gave me some of the best mountain views I have seen from El Crucero, with landscapes that can extend toward Momotombo volcano and Masaya volcano.
There is also Lake Xolotlán, enormous and silent, accompanying the memory of a city that survived the 1972 earthquake and wars that, rather than completely destroying our spirit, only made us stronger.
That is why behind every frequency, every arpeggio, every melody, and every word, there is something more than technology.
There is identity.
There is memory.
There is Nicaragua.
And there is a feeling no artificial intelligence can invent for me.
LONG LIVE NICARAGUA.
🎧 After sharing part of my creative process with you, I want to invite you to listen to my album Deep House Is Life. Especially “Nicaragua, Tierra Bonita”, a composition deeply inspired by my country, memories, and identity.
