Nilton Rodney

When I met Nilton Rodney, I quickly understood that simply calling him a dancer fell quite short. Nilton is one of those people who have made something they love an important part of their lives, and once you start to get to know his story, you understand that behind every movement, every choreography, and every stage are many years of work, learning, and experiences.

His story begins in Costa Rica, within urban culture, and from there he gradually built a path that took him much farther than he probably imagined at the beginning.

His roots are in Costa Rica

Nilton has been connected to Costa Rican urban dance for many years, and an important part of that history is related to X-Entrix Dance Company, a project that helped advance urban culture from Guadalupe, Goicoechea.

What is interesting is that Nilton never stopped at simply learning to dance. Over time, he also developed as a choreographer, instructor, and producer, becoming increasingly involved in everything surrounding dance.

And I think that says quite a lot about him. When something truly excites you, there comes a moment when you no longer just want to practice it. You also want to share it, create around it, and help other people grow.

Dance began taking him beyond Costa Rica

Over the years, dance began opening doors outside his country. Nilton had the opportunity to represent Costa Rica in international competitions such as Hip Hop International in the United States and Hip Hop Kingz in the Netherlands, as well as participating in workshops and dance-related activities in different countries.

One of the moments that always stands out when you look at his journey is X-Entrix's participation in the World Hip Hop Dance Championship in San Diego. To me, beyond any result, what matters is what it meant to be there: a group born in Costa Rica taking its work to a stage where dancers from different parts of the world came together.

That speaks of growth, but also of identity.

When dancing also means teaching

One of the things I value most about Nilton is that his story did not remain solely onstage.

Over time, teaching became an important part of his career. Hip Hop, Reggaeton, K-Pop, and different urban dance styles form part of the language he has been building over the years.

And teaching is not simply repeating steps. When you teach, you share what you have learned, the way you understand music, technique, energy, and even the mistakes you had to make to reach where you are.

I think that also reveals an important part of Nilton: he does not only want to do things well; he also wants to pass on what he knows.

An artist who did not stay within a single style

Something I like about his career is that he has never been afraid to broaden his horizons.

Although his roots are clearly in urban culture, he has also participated in stage projects and productions where dance takes other forms. In 2023, he was part of Reflections, a production presented in Washington, D.C., and also appeared in other choreography and stage dance projects.

And that shows that his evolution has not consisted of abandoning what he learned, but of adding new tools to his way of expressing himself.

Ultimately, a dancer also evolves when they decide to move beyond the familiar.

A new chapter in the United States

Today, Nilton continues developing his career in the DMV area, spanning Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.

After so many years building experience in Costa Rica and Central America, arriving in the United States meant entering a completely different scene, but with something very important in his favor: Nilton already carried a fairly well-defined artistic identity with him.

He was not starting from zero.

He arrived with years of experience as a dancer, choreographer, and teacher, with international competitions, stages he had performed on, and his own way of understanding dance.

The stage simply changed.

Dance and music have always gone hand in hand

Another interesting part of his journey has been his direct relationship with urban music.

Throughout his career, he has had the opportunity to share stages with artists such as Macka Diamond, Ding Dong, Elephant Man, and Merital Family, something that fits perfectly with the connection that has always existed between his way of dancing and the music around him.

And in 2025, he appeared again in a high-level production when he took part in the music video “METATRON” by GoldLink featuring Lola Moxom.

To me, these kinds of projects show that Nilton's story does not belong solely to the past. Everything he built in Costa Rica still has a place in the chapter he is living now.

What truly defines Nilton Rodney

After getting to know him and the entire journey behind what he does, I think it is very easy to call him a dancer, but I feel that word is not enough to describe him fully.

Nilton is a dancer, but he is also a choreographer, teacher, creator, and someone who has known how to turn a passion into a way of life.

His story began in Costa Rica, grew within urban culture, crossed borders, and ended up taking him to new stages in the United States. And at every stage, something remains: his relationship with music and movement.

But perhaps what I like most about knowing his story is that, after so many years, he still has much to tell.

Because some people simply learn to dance.

Others end up making dance part of who they are.

And Nilton Rodney is definitely one of those people.
