After seeing so many videos and posts about Heliconias of Nicaragua on TikTok, my curiosity finally took root. So, during a family getaway toward the Masaya Volcano and the charming White Towns of Carazo and Masaya, we decided to see this hidden gem for ourselves.
The road to Catarina doesn’t seem very promising at first —they could use a more visible monument, I thought— but once you arrive, everything changes. The place is bursting with life. 🌺 There’s plenty of parking, though it would be nice to see staff more clearly identified and a few safety improvements near a small ravine by the entrance.
Entrance is just 50 córdobas ($1.36), though the restroom fee is separate —a small detail they might consider including as a basic courtesy. We didn’t use it, because what truly caught our attention lay just ahead: a vibrant explosion of flowers, colors, and living nature.
Heliconias, sunflowers, and countless tropical plants fill the paths of this botanical garden. The guide, with simple and kind words, explained each one while the children ran joyfully through the trails. It’s easy to lose yourself among so much beauty. 🌿
The walk ends at a cozy souvenir shop, full of sunflower crafts, postcards, and local handmade treasures. There’s also a small café serving traditional Nicaraguan dishes, which we didn’t get to try this time —something to look forward to on our next visit.
And yes, there were sunflowers everywhere —so alive that bees danced around them, performing their natural ritual of pollination. The whole place radiates peace, harmony, and joy.
This isn’t a place to rush. It’s a place to pause, breathe, and smile —to understand why so many visitors, especially young travelers, come here to take pictures surrounded by flowers and light.
We left with plenty of photos and one precious souvenir: a sunflower gifted to my daughter, who held it proudly all the way home. 🌻
We promised to return, next time with more time to explore. Because Catarina and its surroundings deserve several days —to visit the Catarina Viewpoint, the waterfalls of Niquinohomo, Nandasmo, and Masatepe, or the craft workshops of San Juan de Oriente.
This corner of Nicaragua holds something magical. Roads, infrastructure, and tourism access have all improved greatly —a welcome effort. Sometimes, to be amazed, all we need is to look with fresh eyes at the beauty that’s been around us all along. 🇳🇮✨
